Pierścień Iluzji

W tętniącej życiem metropolii Velarius, gdzie wznosiły się majestatyczne budowle pełne złotych kopuł, w monumentalnym koloseum odbywały się coroczne igrzyska. Było to największe widowisko w całym imperium. Pełne niebezpiecznych walk, spektakularnych pokazów i tłumów żądnych emocji.

Pierścień sprzyjał oszustom i iluzjonistom.

Strażnicy przygotowywali się do schwytania go i prawdopodobnie wrzucenia do lochów.

- Teleportacja! - zawołał desperacko.

I zniknął.

Triumfował. Udało mu się zbiec. Magia pierścienia działała, a on mógł schować się bezpiecznie gdzieś, gdzie strażnicy go nie znajdą.

Każda magia miała swój kres, a on czuł, jak pierścień traci siłę.

A strzała trafi prosto w serce.

W końcu poczuł, jak energia pierścienia go opuszcza.

Igrzyska trwały, a tłumy w koloseum wiwatowały.

Nikt nie zauważył upadającego pierścienia.

In the bustling metropolis of Velarius, where majestic buildings crowned with golden domes towered overhead, the annual games were held in the monumental Colosseum. It was the greatest spectacle in the entire empire. Full of dangerous battles, spectacular displays and crowds hungry for excitement. Everyone wanted to see them. The best seats, including the upper box, were reserved exclusively for the elite: the nobility, the wealthiest merchants and influential officials. For ordinary people, there were only the lower stands, crowded and noisy, with a limited view of the arena.

A certain young man - a shrewd rogue, as his name suggested - called Kael had no intention of putting up with this. He had a plan. A plan in which a magic ring, stolen a few days earlier from a careless jeweller, played the leading role.

The ring was a boon to swindlers and illusionists. At first glance, it looked unassuming – just an ordinary silver disc. Its properties, however, allowed the wearer to manipulate others’ perception of reality, making them believe whatever the ring’s owner wished to show them.

Kael, dressed in slightly finer robes than those he usually wore, made his way towards the upper box in the hope that the ring would help him slip in unnoticed.
As he approached the guards stationed at the stairs, he straightened his clothes, smiled with conviction and clenched his hand around the ring.

- I am Lord Ferulus’s new adviser. Let me through! - he said in a calm, confident voice, expecting the ring to work and the guards to believe his lie.

For a moment, it actually seemed that way. Then one of them narrowed his eyes, leaned towards the thug and, without a hint of confusion, muttered:
- I spoke to Lord Ferulus’s adviser this morning. And you… you don’t look like someone who knows courtly manners, - he said, emphasising the last words particularly sternly.

Kael, taken aback, realised he’d squandered his chance. The guards were preparing to seize him and, in all likelihood, throw him into the dungeons.

- Teleportation! - he cried desperately.

And he vanished.

He was triumphant. He’d managed to escape. The ring’s magic had worked, and he could hide safely somewhere where the guards wouldn’t find him.

But where exactly was he?

He was trapped inside an invisible box - a magical trap that acted like a two-way mirror. From the outside, he was completely invisible, though he himself could see everything that was happening around him. The surprised guards stood in exactly the same spot as a moment before, looking around nervously.

He, too, hadn’t moved an inch.

- Teleportation, eh? - grumbled the first.

- We know that trick. We’ll be waiting. -  said the second guard, raising his bow and drawing the string.

Kael panicked. He paced round the box, pounding his fists against invisible walls, trying to find a way out, but to no avail. The trap was perfect, and his disappearance, as the guards’ words suggested, was only temporary. All magic had its limits, and he could feel the ring losing its power.

Minutes passed. Kael watched as the guards waited patiently, their bows at the ready, aiming at the spot where he had vanished. He knew that once the magic had completely faded, he would reappear - defenceless and exposed.

And the arrow would strike him straight through the heart.

At last, he felt the ring’s energy leave him. The box vanished, and he reappeared in exactly the same spot where he had vanished before.

The guards released their bowstrings.

He didn’t stand a chance.

If only he’d known the rules… If only… what? If only he hadn’t been who he was? Nonsense.

"Everything that has happened was bound to happen; and only what must happen will happen"¹ — who said that? — he thought. And he fell silent for ever.

The Games continued, and the crowds in the Colosseum cheered.

No one noticed the ring falling.
